Sponsorship and Privileged Operations

Overview

Privileged Operations (PO) refers to the use of Kondo Syokai Marine Blue Michi Yachts to support activities benefitting the community. The operation is referred to as Privileged since it confers certain significant benefits on the owners - in particular sponsorship from Kondo Syokai.

To be accepted as PO the activity must at least meet the following 3 criteria:

  1. the work results in lifting of the human spirit or condition, contributes positive energy or goes someway to meeting our collective human responsibilities.
  2. a significant useful part of the work is made available to the widest possible community or the work is in service of the community and in all cases is without charge.
  3. there is no existing reasonably available alternative provision that the community could use.

Furthermore the yacht must be an essential part of the overall experience - no sponsorship will be given to yachts simply lying in marinas.

The significant benefits arising from running PO's are as follows:

  1. Kondo Syokai will pay an amount to the owner for each year of Privileged Operation up to a maximum of 4 years
  2. Kondo Syokai Marine will undertake annual servicing/maintenance/repairs on a parts and materials only basis when the work is performed at Kondo Syokai Marine facilities in Cochin.
  3. Kondo Syokai Marine will provide new sails at material cost + shipping only whilst the vessel is being used for PO's
  4. Malabar Yacht Club will provide sail training for free

FAQ

How much will Kondo Syokai Pay towards Privileged Operations?

See here for the current purchase costs and sponsorship rates.

Who decides what qualifies as Privileged Operations?

All proposals for Privileged Operations are considered by the PO Review Panel and passed to those people who are currently running Privileged Operations for comment. It will also be posted on the web to receive community comment. The PO Review Panel make the final decision which will be made public and the reasons made clear.

Please give examples of what might be considered Privileged Operations

There has to be a direct positive outcome external to the group doing the work and it has to be measurable and validated. The following would certainly be in the right direction:

  1. educational programs
  2. environmental research
  3. software development and documentation for the Free Software Foundation, BSD and Linux based systems
  4. artistic endeavour

Please give examples of what would not be considered Privileged Operations

You might think that a group of youngsters wanting to spend 1 year sailing for personal development would be approved. It would not. This is because whilst the outcome would most probably be beneficial to the individuals and later to their communities this is simply a foundation aim of the Metis Line operation. There is no direct positive result outside of the group whilst the activity is in progress.

If my proposal is deemed Privileged Operation is that enough for me to qualify?

No - there are 2 further requirements as follows:

1. Qualification of personnel

To qualify for PO the people taking part must themselves be qualified to do the work. This is not necessarily referring to educational qualification - it includes the large majority of excellent people qualified by experience and previous record.

2. Sponsors decoration

The yachts must be decorated with the Metis Line decal (the Blue Michi) as originally painted on the boat during manufacture. In addition the Kondo Syokai decal (supplied by Kondo Syokai) must be fitted to the hull immediately aft of the Blue Michi, port and starboard.

Can paid work also be accepted as Privileged Operation?

Yes. It doesn't matter how the work is funded. Self-funded, sponsored or paid isn't the point, it is the work itself that counts and it's free availability to the widest possible community.

As another example illustrating these points, last year a well known professional artist went sailing with the Malabar Yacht Club. He was travelling to stimulate new creative ideas. Would this qualify as Privileged Operation?

Is he qualified?

yes - both academically and in practice as a full time artist

Is the work beneficial?

---* Does it contribute positively to human experience?

yes

---* Is a significant useful part of the work being made to the community free of cost?

No - well not as far as we know

So it wouldn't qualify. However if some of the work was to be made available online as high definition images/video allowing a best possible appreciation and examination of it then it would qualify.

What happens if I sell the yacht?

It makes no difference whether the yacht is in the possession of the original owner or has been sold, the opportunity to use the vessel for Privileged Operations still stands and can be applied for any owner.

It there any time limit on this?

Yes, to qualify for PO's the yachts must be less than 8 years ex works.

I would like to run a Privileged Operation but I can't sail

There are several options open to you if this is the case:

  1. Learn to sail - since this is provided free to people running PO's
  2. Hire crew
  3. Sponsor the PO and get others to do the sailing
