The Blue Michi Yachts
Page Contents
Overview
The success of the Metis Line is dependant on a supply of ultra low cost, ocean going, liveaboard yachts. The task of specifying and making these is being carried out by Kondo Syokai Marine (KSM) and the yachts are being made available under the general specification name of Blue Michi.
The aims of the Blue Michi specification are:
- to ensure minimal initial and operating costs without compromise on function and durability.
- to facilitate group sailing activities - at least 6 unrelated people sailing and working together for prolonged periods
- to have a robust vessel able to withstand heavy crew use
- to have a vessel that can be easily maintained and serviced in locations where facilities are poor
- to provide an excellent sailing experience
The design chosen for the base vessel is initially the Colvin Gazelle since this is a design that is well known to KSM and it is a design that is inherently low cost, not just to manufacture but also equally importantly it has low operating/maintenance/repair costs. The Colvin Gazelle is also an extremely strong and safe vessel and a pleasure to sail. There is however no reason why other suitable designs could not be used - possibly providing more space, different rig etc. but still achieving the same aim of rigorously slashing costs of purchase and ownership.
